About

As I said before, my career started much like most everyone elses, it began humbly. But, that kid had a lot of goals, and he had a hunger to prove himself.

My career could be broken up into three acts (indulge me, I was once an actor).

Act 1: The first third of my career took place in the commercial broadcast realm. My goal at the time of graduating college was to become a nationally-known sportscaster. My heroes at the time included Bob Costas and Chris Berman. And I followed that path with gusto. I was the sports director for WJNO in south Florida for a few years. I spent my afternoon at practices, my evenings at games, and my mornings talking to thousands about their favorite teams. I even ventured into television for a couple seasons as a high school football announcer.

Act 2: The second part of my career saw me enter the public radio universe. I went on a journey from market to market as a reporter, anchor, host, and director. I took my first public radio job at WUFT at the University of Florida where I taught young journalists for the future. Then I found myself back in the reporter and host chair, covering stories, hosting my first talk shows in Fort Myers then Las Vegas.

Act 3: The third act of my career brought me full circle to south Florida, the place I have always considered home. I took over as anchor at WLRN in the amazing city of Miami. Then, I was given the opportunity to create a brand new talk program, Sundial, that became a highly rated show in a big market. I left for something new and found myself in Providence, Rhode Island hosting Morning Edition and two podcasts.

I’m excited for the future because I believe, even after 25 years of broadcast journalism, my career is only halfway done, there are so many more acts and many more stories to to experience.

I’m Luis

I’m the Morning Edition host for The Public’s Radio in Providence. I’m also a podcast host, blogger, writer, artist, and daydreamer.

I just waned to tell you that I love Luis Hernandez.  He has a beautiful voice and his conversational style  as a morning host is very engaging. Somehow he seems more relaxed and real than most radio hosts.  I am very glad you found him.  Good job!

As a teacher, I often share with my class, your interesting snippets of facts I hear as I prepare to leave my home for work; a fun and thought-provoking way to begin their day! My principal and I often comment on your reporting and carry with us, your work, throughout the day! You are doing a wonderful job!
